All the clocks you will be viewing over the next pages have been stripped to their individual components. Then cleaned and checked for any damage. The components are then cleaned, pivots burnished and the movement plates are cleaned, the pivot holes are cleaned out to get rid of any dirt left behind after cleaning. Any “bushing” is then carried out at this time.

The springs are then removed from the barrels, the springs are replaced as a standard part of the service. The barrels are then cleaned and new springs fitted.

The whole movement is then re-assembled and checked before oiling, it is then “run” on a test frame for 1 week after which it is returned to the case and “run” again for a minimum of 1 month. This is to ensure that everything is working as it should. It is then run for a full week after you have purchased it to ensure it is working correctly before you receive it. So please allow time for this in the delivery.

Before the movement is returned to the case a decision is made about whether to “refurbish” or “restore” the case. I am a great believer in a clock showing its age, or at least some of it. I would much rather “refurbish” than “restore”, you can go to far with restoration and then the clock loses its authenticity. In which case you may as well buy new!

So some of the clocks I have will show a few minor knocks and wear, but nothing too bad, otherwise my wife won’t let me list it. She will instead strip, stain and re-polish the case.
